Announcing our collaboration with Mapillary!
We’re excited to announce that Safety in Numbers has collaborated with Mapillary to add their street-level imagery and road features found with their computer vision to map.safe7y!
Street-level images 📷
Mapillary is a street-level imagery platform that allows users anywhere in the world to contribute street-view imagery from phones, dash cams, and professional street view rigs. All of this imagery (more than 1.5 billion images!) is made available to the public via their app and their top notch API.
Collaborating with Mapillary gives Safety in Numbers users instant access to street level imagery to identify road safety features and flag hazards. It also allows anyone with a smartphone to contribute, by adding imagery. Imagery added to Mapillary will automatically appear on map.safe7y.com as soon as it has been processed by Mapillary.
Machine detected objects 🤖
In addition to street-level imagery we have also added Mapillary object detections. Mapillary uses powerful computer vision tools to identify all kinds of objects. We’ve displayed all of the road safety related objects on map.safe7y so that our analysts, and the general public, can use Mapillary’s objects as a jumping off point for identifying new features.
Big data, savings lives 🚗💥 🚙
Knowing where signs, barriers and other road safety features are is critical to preventing the 35,000+ deaths that occur every year on US roads.
With this data:
- Federal Agencies can determine appropriate safety standards
- State DOT’s and installers can easily evaluate device performance, cost projects, and identify maintenance issues
- Device manufacturers can assess the in service performance of their devices
You can read lots more about these safety improvements, and the specific issues Safety in Numbers is trying to address, in this post.
Thank you! 🙌
None of this would be possible without the talented people of Mapillary or their amazing community and we’d like to sincerely thank all of them for contributing to our mission — providing data to make the roads a safe place.
